Coby Karl has surgery for Papillary Carcinoma at local Boise hospitalApril 24, 2006

Boise State lines spread guard Coby Karl underwent surgery on his thyroid on Monday evening at a local Boise hospital. Karl found a lump last fall and consulted a doctor a few weeks ago and discovered it was a Papillary Carcinoma. The surgery was successful and Karl is expected to recover fully. A Papillary Carcinoma is one of the most treatable forms of cancer and has the highest success rate for a cure according to Karl’s doctor, Dr. Matthew Schwarz. The family asks that you respect their privacy at the hospital and at home during the next few days. A press conference will be held sometime after Karl is released from the hospital. Because of privacy issues, members of the Boise State athletic department are unable to answer any questions.

Karl is recovering at the hospital and released this statement Tuesday. “Everything went well and I plan on being back to 100 percent in a couple of weeks. I want to thank everyone for their concerns and prayers.”

Dr. Matthew Schwarz, Coby's doctor, said "Coby had a common type of cancer which had spread into two lymph nodes in his neck. We removed the complete thyroid and both lymph nodes. He will have a course of radioactive iodine in six weeks and he should make an uneventful recovery."

Karl’s dad George, his mom Cathy and his sister Kelci were all in Boise for the surgery.
