Something need to care when installing laminate floor

Some users of laminate floor feel bad after their use. In fact, many problems are due to the bad way of setting. The way of installation is a key factor to decide the performance and duration of laminate flooring. But many users know little about the setting. So it is necessary to let our customers know the relevant notice. 1. Furniture should not be put on and people should not walk on the floor until 12 hours later because the planks will expand or shrink after installation. Also the locking system begins to work in this period. There is still some time needed for the planks to be compatible well with each other. Pressure should not be put on the planks during this period. 2. Make the subfloor for installation even, dry and clean. Shovel the obviously uneven place and clean the subfloor. Don’t install floor if the subfloor is not even enough. 3. The usual wastage is around 4% of the total installation area. But the wastage will be more if you house has stairs or your house is abnormal. Consider the quantity when you buy the products. Talk with the seller of floor to confirm the time for installation. 4. Talk with installer to choose the way of installation, especially choosing the direction of installation. Wrong direction will affect the look a great deal.

5. Check the brand, design, quantity, click type, ratings of wear resistance, core color, dimensions and quality of laminate flooring to see if it is the same as which you have ordered after the seller sends you the goods. If not, advise the seller to replace it as soon as possible.

6. Tell installer that which place can’t be cut or nailed to avoid the damage of water pipe, other pipes and lines before installer installs skirting and other accessories at door and wall.

7. The underlay to be put on the subfloor directly should be connected well at their joints. And adhesive tape should be used to glue the joints. The vapour from the subfloor is easy to touch the back of floor from the leak if the work isn’t done well.

8. Appoint the place for installer to cut the planks. The planks can be cut in bathroom, corridor or balcony. Cut plank on the underlay as it will make trouble for the installer’s future work.

9. The gap between wall and laminate floor should be between 8mm and 9mm. The plank will expand and shrink. If there is no space for the movement, they will become curved and push up at the joints. Most users choose 8.3mm planks. So you can use a cut 8.3mm thick plank as the gap standard and insert it in the gap. Remember to pick up the cut planks when installing skirting, otherwise the planks can’t expand and shrink freely. The cut planks should not be put at the end or head of floor if their length is less than 220mm.

10. The gap between the bottom of door and the floor(including the accessory installed on the floor) should be between 4mm and 5mm so that the door still can work well after it sinks.

11. The planks should be orderly in transverse and lengthways direction. Each row should be in line.

12. The accessories such as T-moulding or quarter round should be used if the width or length of floor is over 9m to offer space for the bulge and contract. Also the accessories should be used at the joints between room and outer place.

13. The gap between wall and the accessories should be suitable. The gap should allow the planks to expand and shrink freely. Also it should cover the gap between the planks and wall to avoid the exposure of it.

14.Talk with installer timely if there is something incomprehensible or you want to change some design. Talk with the seller directly if you till don’t understand the matter to solve the problem timely. 15. Common laminate floor is not suitable for bathroom or kitchen as it is not water resistant. But Some special waterproof laminate flooring can be used for these places.

The dimensions of China laminate floor

The dimensions of China laminate floor have its features.

There are standard ,narrow and wide sizes. For standard sizes, currently the length is 1210mm,1212mm, 1213mm and 1214mm. And the width is 192mm, 193mm and 194mm. Most European manufacturers only use the standard sizes. For narrow sizes, currently the length is 1212mm, 810mm, 807mm, 806mm and 805mm. And the width is 90mm, 125mm, 126mm, 127mm and 130mm. And China manufacturers produce laminate flooring in terms of the sizes to imitate hardwood flooring due the similar sizes. And the usually thickness is 12.3mm. Planks with the narrow sizes have the advantages of stable quality, cheap prices compared with the imitated one. Relevant surfaces such as hand pressed surface, painted V groove,  pressed V groove and UV-shine is made in China to imitate the surface of hardwood flooring. And the sizes are very popular in China. For wide sizes, currently the length is 1210mm,1212mm, 1213mm and 1214mm. And the width is 295mm, 296mm and 297mm. The wide sizes is invented by China wooden laminated flooring manufacturer to meet the tast of local market. Wide size planks have the advantages of less gap, more complete color and cheaper prices.

The advantages of laminate floor

Laminate floor and bamboo floor are both wood flooring surfaces. Although like everything other, they both have their pros and cons. Let’s take a closer look to that

Laminate floor is much cheaper. The prices of bamboo is usually 3-4 times higher than it

Moisture resistance.   Both of the products are strong moisture resistant. But BF is much better. BF even can be used in kitchen. The swelling rate of BF is very low.

Durability   Regarding durability, Bamboo flooring is better than laminate flooring. LF can’t be repaired if the top layer, abrasion resistance, is broken as there is no layer to protect the decorative layer and support material. BF still can be used if its surface is broken because there is still bamboo under the
surface.  
 
The content of formaldehyde.  BF is mainly made up of glued bamboo planks, while the support material of LF consists of glued wooden fiber. So the content of formaldehyde in LF is times of that in bamboo. But LF is also safe as long as it meet the standard of formaldehyde release.

Colors available:    Almost all the colors can be available to laminate floors: pine, oak, birch, beech, cherry, oak, teak, walnut, ceramic tile, granite, marble and even including bamboo. But the colors for bamboo flooring(BF) are just natural color, carbonized color and several other colors.

Appearance.   BF gives a natural, elegant and comfortable feel. It makes your house more valuable. Common LF can’ t offer such feel. But now there is some type of LF with hardwood like appearance such as V groove type and hand scraped surface.

Noise.   laminate floor is of a floating type. There is some noise when people step, while there is only a little noise from BF as its installation method is quite different from LF. It is not a floating type. But attached underlayment on the back of LF can reduce most of the noise.

Abrasion resistance. Laminate flooring is strong abrasion resistant. AC4 and AC5 rating LF can be used for heavy commercial purpose. It can be used in many high traffic indoor places such as gymnasium and supermarkets. Bamboo flooring is not strong abrasion resistant. It can be used in high traffic place.

China 12mm type laminate floor

China 12mm type laminate floor becomes more and more popular now.

A. The thickness is especially suitable for the the purpose of hardwood like appearances. The dimensions for the relevant finishes are as follows: pressed or painted V groove(807*126*12mm, 807*90*12mm, 805*143*12mm,), mould pressed finish(807*126*12mm, 807*143*12mm, 807*163*12mm), square shape(600*600*12mm, 500*500*12mm), UV-shine(1214*143*12.3mm, 1214*163*12.3mm) and hand scraped surface(807*163*12mm, 807*143*12.3mm).

B. 12mm laminate flooring is not easy to be curving due its thickness. So customers will not require thicker laminate flooring such as 14mm to avoid higher prices.

D. The 12mm thickness can reduce much noise and it is more press resistant due to its thickness.

8mm type laminate flooring

8mm type laminate flooring(or 8.3mm) is the most popular type of laminate worldwidely due to its cheaper prices and stable quality. Its gloable marke share is over 90%.  It is made from 8mm thick support material materal instead of 12mm core. So its price is much cheaper. Now there is 7mm support material availabe. And 7mm laminate is bit cheaper due to its less thickness. But many manufacturers can't guarantee the quality of 7mm stable. Many problems happens on the locking system of 7mm because it is too thinner. 8mm has be tried and developed for many traditional surface for 12mm laminate such as painted V groove, pressed V groove, handscarped surface and piano suface.

Its other advantages are as follows:

A. 1*20ft container can hold about 2630sqm of 8mm laminate flooring(pallets are included in container). For 12mm plank, the packing  quantity is about 1830sqm. So more 8mm laminate flooring can be put in 1*20ft container, which reduces the shipping cost a great deal.  

B. 8mm thickness can work with 297mm width. But for 6mm and 7mm,the plank is easy to buckle in the across side.

C. There is no big noise with 8mm plank when people step on it.

Laminate flooring on carpet?

Someone asked: “Before I put carpet in my bedroom. Now I want to install laminate flooring because it is strong abraison resistant and easy to maintain. I have pets of two dogs and 3 cats.  I just don’t want to spend too much time in cleaning the floor. And the paw of my pets leaves too much scratches on the carpet, which make the carpets looks ugly. Hope the problem can be solved after the installation. I know underlayment should be put under laminate floor. But I don’t think I need to buy it: the current carpet is an ideal substitution for it. Can I just install the planks over the current carpet?”

My reply:

No,  carpet padding will be too thick and soft and would likely make the floor flex and break at the joints.

The underlayment is mainly made up of poly foam. It is quite thin. Such problem will not happen in case of  underlayment. You also may need to level your floor before installing the planks while the work is not necessary for the purpose of laying carpet. So we suppose you haven’t done the work before. The underlayment can prevent the vapor from touching the planks and reduce much noise of planks when people steps on it.

The meaning of laminate flooring

The standard name of laminate flooring is laminate floor covering.

Laminate flooring is usually made up of four layers: top layer which is named abrasion resistance layer; second layer which is named decorative layer; third layer which is consists of HDF, MDF or flakeboard; bottom layer which is named balance back layer. The four layers are incorporated into one product by heavy pressure and high temperature.

The fist layer mainly consists of even AL2O3. AL2O3 is main material of manmade diamond. So you can see how tough the surface is. The strength of top layer is decided by the density of AL2O3. If the density is too high, it will affect not only the flexility and durability, but also transparence and polish of the surface. For domestic purpose, 4000-6000 turns are enough.

The second layer is made up of decorative paper which has been dipped in melamine first.

The third layer, core, is the main part of laminate flooring. Most manufacturers use HDF or MDF for the core because HDF or MDF has many advantages which solid wood doesn't have such as even density. The core color is green or brown. Green core is a bit more moisture resistant.

The fourth layer is usually made up of polyester material which can resist vapor from the subfloor and balance other 3 layers.

Now there is a new layer for choice: silence layer. The layer consists of cork or foam. It is attached to the back of balance back layer to reduce noise. Laminate is a floating type of flooring. There is some noise when people walk on it. The silence layer can remove most of the noise. It main colors are black, brown and blue. The thickness of the layer is usually 2mm and 3mm.

The main finishes for laminate flooring are big embossed surface, middle embossed surface, little embossed surface, silk surface, crystal surface, mirror surface, V groove, feather grain surface and hand scraped surface. Embossed surface, silk surface and feather grain surface are rough surface. Mirror surface and crystal surface are of smooth. Little embossed surface and crystal surface are the most popular finishes.

The usually dimensions are as follows: length: 807mm and 1214mm; width: 90mm, 126mm, 143mm, 163mm and 193mm; thickness: 7mm, 8.3mm and 12.3mm. The most popular size is 1213*193*8.3mm or similar one.

Laminate flooring is fitted together with normal tongue and groove before. Now most laminate flooring locks together with locking system. The most popular locking systems are double click, single click and round click.

Choose laminate flooring?

A customer asked us:"I have a bedroom. It is covered with carpet. But instead I prefer a hard surface floor. Most of my house is tiled, however in my bedroom I dont want tile floor or carpet. How about laminate flooring? Will there be any unnormal smell from it Is it difficult to install?

My reply:

Laminate is a good hard surface which is strong abraion resistant and easy to maintain. There is no any unnormal smell from our products. It is of environmental protection. If you are good with a measuring rule, a special table saw and  a miter saw, installation is relatively easy. Don’t get the cheap laminate with bad quality that you can buy. These kinds of products are easy to peel, hard to intall, too much formaldehyde release, easy to be scratched, easy to be pressed, easy to be broken or have other quality problem. You should lay a special underlayment which is used to keep the moisture from getting into the flooring and reduce the noise a great deal if you install over concrete.

The long side can't be intalled?

An end customer have a question: “It was all going well first.  Then I started on a new row. But the length would just not click into the previous row.  The long side can't  installed. Why? The problem make me headache!”

My answer:

First, please check the ground for installing laminate flooring is level. Make the ground level if it isn’t.

Second, you should tilte the next row of planks up at a 45 degree angle, then insert the tounge into the grove of the first row and press down holding pressure against the first row. Also after doing this, try using a mallet and a scrap piece of wood to tap the pieces together to get a tight seam on the short side. Don’t continue intall the next plank unless the previous connection is done well.

Third, some locking systems are very tight.  Insert the tongue into the groove from half length of the fist row. And then tape the plank against the short side to make the connection tight.

Fourth, please take some photos of the installation and emial us to let us check that if there is still the problem.

Fifth, we don’t know if you buy the products from us or not. The planks from other manufacturers maybe can’t match well if the planks are from different lots.  Our production machine and technology are very advanced. Our planks from different lots match well.
